TEENAGE tales of Helston in the late 1960s are set to be brought back to life when members of the town's former Basement Youth Club gather for a reunion next month.

The club, which in its early years boasted a membership of well over 200, was set up in 1965 after the then vicar, the Rev John Woollan, offered the young people the use of the vicarage basement in Cross Street, provided they could find adults willing to supervise their meetings.

Initially run by Helston schoolteacher Mike Carr, the enterprise was handed over in 1967 to Roland "Chiefy" Holton and his wife, Muriel, who oversaw the club's many and varied activities. Sport was a keen area of interest and members formed football, cross country and table tennis teams, not forgetting the renowned Basement Butchers hockey team.

Next month's reunion - the first for four years - takes place at the Godolphin Club on Saturday, October 30, with a social evening also arranged for the previous night.

Organiser Linda Smith is keen to hear from anyone interested in attending, or who may have contact details for former club members who have moved away from the area. Linda can be contacted on 01326 562095/561486 or at Treweath, Trewennack, Helston, TR13 0PL.
