CIVIC leaders in Taunton Deane and the French town of Lisieux are gearing up to celebrate half a century of friendship next year.

The Anglo-French link is one of the oldest in the country after the Mayors of Lisieux and Taunton signed an official twinning agreement in 1955.

The 50th anniversary will be marked by a ceremony of renewal by the current Mayors. It is hoped that other twinning organisations in Taunton who have staged exchange visits over the years will be represented.

Taunton Deane-Lisieux Civic Twinning Link chairman Colin Croad said: "Over the years there have been extensive contacts, including rugby, football, badminton, judo, cycling and fencing clubs, as well as interest groups such as photography and philately."

Any groups wishing to join the civic visit to Lisieux from May 27-31 should call Mr Croad on 01823-480429.

Mr Croad said: "Obviously, if the event is well supported, as is hoped, it will be necessary to put in place the preparations well in advance of the visit -- anyonewishing to go should make contact as soon as possible."
