An attendance of 20,155 elevated the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society's weekend Smallholder and Garden Festival to unexpected levels of success.

This was the fourth year for the Festival to be staged by the society on the showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, and in warm sunny weather visitors were double the number of the 2003 event.

"The Festival can only be described as a knock-out hit," said Royal Welsh Secretary, Peter Guthrie. "People came in droves over the two days and they arrived in such numbers on the opening morning that we had to lay on additional staff at the gates to cope with the influx."

The Festival caters specifically for gardeners and smallholders, of which there are an increasing number in Wales and the rest of the UK. However, the range of exhibits and trade stands and the content of the programme of entertainment have been considerably expanded to provide for a more general audience as well. The formula has again shown the Royal Welsh to be a society with a magic touch when it comes to entertaining on a grand scale.

"The Festival is now a well rounded event for all the family," Mr Guthrie said, "and the introduction of the open dog show attracting some 1200 entries helped us to achieve this. There was a very good ambience and people enjoyed themselves immensely.

"Smallholding is expanding all the time and smallholders keep livestock because they have a genuine love of doing so. Consequently, we are seeing the lesser breeds, of sheep and pigs especially, being preserved as a genetic pool for future generations."

In seeking to expand the gardening element of the event the number of competitive display stands doubled from 2003 and the Festival also attracted a record number of trade stands and stallholders have already indicated that they will be booking space for 2005.
