MINEHEAD produced two poor displays over the Easter weekend in Division One of the Toolstation League.

On Saturday, they fought back from two down to secure a 4-2 victory at home to Roman Glass St George despite a disjointed performance and followed it up with a 4-0 reverse at Portishead on Monday.

Manager Mick Armitage was very disappointed his team could not replicate the displays that had seen them defeat highflying Cadbury Heath and Sherborne in consecutive weeks. He said the victory over Roman Glass masked below-par showing from his side who were fortunate to only lose by four against Portishead.

He said: "We didn't perform anywhere near as well as we have been.

"We managed to get a win against Roman Glass but the scoreline flattered us.

"We didn't get going for the first 70 minutes, we couldn't string passes together and looked very disjointed.

"It was a similar story against Portishead and we were fortunate not to concede more.

"Perhaps the players think they have done enough after stringing a few wins together.

"We've had so many seasons where we've been scrambling for points to avoid relegation and now we're looking down at the sides below us and we think we can take our foot off the pedal.

"But that's not the case. Almondsbury won at the weekend and we can easily get dragged back into trouble if we don't keep picking up points."

Against Roman Glass the Blues were under the cosh for most of the first half and were thankful to only be down by one at the break.

They fell 2-0 down on the hour mark when keeper Chris Meredith failed to claim a cross and the ball rebounded into the net off Greg Howard.

Minehead changed to 3-5-2 in a bid to get back into the game and it did the trick as they began to show some cohesion.

The Blues pulled one back with 20 minutes left when Howard's shot was deflected over the keeper for an own goal. The hosts poured forward and levelled five minutes later when Luke Taylor's shot went in off the post.

A misplaced header back to the keeper resulted in a second own goal from the same Roman Glass player to make it 3-2 and Aaron Deekes converted Andy Hall's cross to complete the scoring.

Despite that fight back, Minehead were simply not at the races on Monday.

They were penned back from the start, although it took Portishead 35 minutes to break the deadlock.

They scored again before half-time and added another two after the break and spurned countless other opportunities.

Minehead v Roman Glass St George: Chris Meredith, Mike Mullins, Greg Howard, Sam Hutchings, Lee Todd, Andy hall, Simon Lyons, Luke Taylor, Guy Burns, Aaron Deekes, Lee Smythe. Subs: Luke Webber, James Browning. Same starting 11 against Portishead but subs were Steve Arnold, Will Lewis, James Browning.

MINEHEAD are home to Almondsbury this Saturday and victory will send them 14 points clear of their opponents. With only one side going, down that should be enough to avoid the drop, especially as Weston St Johns are a further two points back.
