ENGLAND'S team selection has come under fire after their heavy defeat to the West Indies last night.

Captain Joe Root offered no excuses as the tourists slid to a 381-run defeat in the first Test, part-time off-spinner Roston Chase picking up 8-60 for the Windies on day four in Bridgetown.

England's first innings had seen them skittled for 77, and then Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich put together an unbeaten stand of 295 to pile on the punishment.

Root accepted his side let themselves down badly in their first outing of the year, while calling for a big response in the second Test.

He said: "It's bitterly disappointing. We've had a bad week collectively and massively underperformed.

"We're a far better side than that. We're not going to hide behind anything, it was very frustrating in the dressing room

"It's disappointing but it doesn't mean we're out of this series and it doesn't mean we're a bad side. We have to bounce back very quickly."

England's team selection had prompted discussion, particularly Sam Curran and Adil Rashid being included at the expense of Stuart Broad and Somerset spinner Jack Leach.

But Root added: "We went into the game with a very difficult decision to make and it would be very easy to pick that apart with the way we played.

"It's not come off and it would be easy to overplay that or make a rash decision off the back of it.

"We just have to take it on the chin, look at the surface and try and read it a bit better."

However, former England and Somerset cricketer Vic Marks told the Test Match Special podcast: "They picked the wrong team and played rubbish.

"The flaw in that team is that they had two bowlers [Curran and Rashid] who you could not trust to bowl 15 overs in an innings if the conditions were not right for them.

"It was not swinging for Curran and not spinning for Rashid, and England have got a great deficit, a big problem.

"That was then made worse, fielding-wise, by the fact that the West Indian right-handers kept hitting Moeen [Ali] for six.

"So Root has only two bowlers out of five who he's confident of giving the ball to."

Marks concluded: "There's a difference between being bold and being naive, and looking back I suspect they've been naive rather than bold."

Unsurprisingly, Somerset fans also had their say on Leach being left out for this first Test.
