JAMIE Overton has reflected on an “incredible day” which saw him join the likes of Sir Viv Richards and Vic Marks in Somerset folklore.

Overton became the fourth man to be named man of the match in a victorious Lord’s final for Somerset following his 3-48 against Hampshire – becoming part of an exclusive club including just Richards, Marks and Keith Parsons.

Overton’s scalps included the key wicket of Rilee Rossouw, who played on to his stumps just as he was taking the attack to Somerset, while the 25-year-old also accounted for Gareth Berg and Chris Wood, both caught on the fine leg boundary.

“It’s a pretty surreal day,” Overton said.

“We had a lot of belief coming into the game as we know we’ve got an amazing squad, but you’ve still got to perform on the day.

“We did that today and it feels incredible.”

Overton was not overly unhappy when Somerset were asked to bowl upon losing the toss – “we knew the morning would be the best time to bowl, with the moisture in the wicket” – and so it proved.

The cup final win also marked Overton’s first silverware in Somerset colours following several near misses prior to his first team debut in 2012.

“It’s great for the boys to get over that line, which we haven’t been able to do in recent years,” he said.

“We have a great squad, a lot of self-belief and a lot of camaraderie.

“Everyone wants each other to do well and it’s an amazing feeling knowing how happy all the boys are for each other.

“We have a lot of young talent coming through and we have grown up together.

“Then we have Tregs [Peter Trego], Hildy [James Hildreth] and then Tres [Marcus Trescothick] in the four-day stuff and it all comes together.

“It’s a brilliant feeling for the coaches, players and supporters.”
