SOMERSET and England bowler Andy Caddick came within eight runs of scoring his first ever century for the county in the Championship match at Worcester, this week in September 1995.
Somerset began the day on 267-6 and soon lost Rob Turner (34), but the hosts had reckoned without an eighth-wicket stand of 117 between Caddick and Jason Kerr.
Caddick, restricted to just six Championship matches that year by a shin problem, was in fine form with the bat, having made a career-best 61 against Durham the month before.
He reached new heights here, as Kerr (42) played solidly and gave Caddick the platform for an explosive innings on a slow pitch.
Caddick helped himself to 13 fours and a six in scoring 92 in two-and-a-half hours, but he was denied his century by Phil Newport - Scott Ellis taking the catch at long-leg.
In reply to Somerset’s first innings of 425, Worcester piled up 670-7 declared, and the visitors reached 275-3 to secure the draw.
That meant that the match had produced 1,370 runs for only 20 wickets! How times change.
