Simon Willetts talks about beauty and hair for the big day

So you have the partner of your dreams, the beautiful dress and the flowers. But now you need the perfect look that will leave everyone in awe.

Undoubtedly, a wedding is intensely stressful. Not only do you make a huge commitment before close family and treasured friends, but the photographic evidence will be proudly shared and displayed on mantelpieces for decades to come! To ease the pressure a little, I have gathered some beauty do’s and don’ts to keep in mind before you say “I do!”

DO go with a pro. Your hair and make-up on your special day will be more distinctive and polished than your everyday style. You might be tempted to choose friends to create your wedding hair and make-up, but sometimes such intimate familiarity can cloud even your best friend’s objectivity. Your BFF might also not have the experience to advise what will work best in the photographs. Professional hairdressers and make-up artists with plenty of wedding experience will also be able to ensure that preparations for the big event will be a stress-free and enjoyable.

DO plan ahead. It is not unusual to have at least two practice sessions to discuss and practice hairstyles with and without the veil. I recommend that you start at least six months in advance to make allowances for colour appointments, light trims and deep conditioning treatments. If hair pieces are required, they need to be ordered and colour-matched. Bring your veil and hair ornaments to the practice session, because they will be crucial to designing your style. It is also useful to show the head bridesmaid how to fix the veil so that it can be easily removed.

DO shop around. Take advantage of a free consultation with a wedding hair specialist. This will help you decide if they can satisfy your specific needs for the wedding party on your special day, leaving you to enjoy the day with your new life partner.

DON’T be driven by other’s expectations. It’s your day – wear your hair the way that makes you look and feel the best. I would suggest discussing it with a wedding hair specialist and taking their advice.

DON’T be afraid to exaggerate your look. What may seem over the top on your salon trial when you’re wearing your jeans will look in proportion on the day when you’re wearing your dress. While your hair and make-up should not compete with your dress, it has equal billing on your special day.

DO consider the photographs. Most people know that their skin needs more careful attention for photographs, but many don’t realise how a twodimensional image can make a hairstyle appear flat and lessen its impact. Bring a camera to the practice sessions so you can appreciate the difference and of course have a record of the style.

With everything else that will be happening on your day, it is essential that you have confidence in your beauty team. Nothing must stand in the way of your enjoyment of this unique experience. Every bride should feel like a pampered celebrity on this momentous occasion and the right professional team will make sure it happens.
